In Japan, Pretty Cure (or PreCure for short) is at the forefront of the genre, spanning 12 different series (with a 13th coming in 2016) each with their own movie, 8 crossover movies, and a MASSIVE amount of merchandise. But there’s a particular magical girl franchise that’s, until now, had almost no presence in the west whatsoever: Pretty Cure. It’s clear I’m not alone either, as the influence of the magical girl genre has begun to find its way into modern western animation with cartoons like Steven Universe and Star Vs. Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Tokyo Mew Mew and the more obscure Magical Girl Pretty Sammy were all series I grew up with, and even now as I reach my mid-20s my fondness for sparkly transformation sequences and fighting evil with the power of love remains ever present. Man, you know what I love, you guys? MAGICAL GIRLS.
